What is rhinoplasty? Rhinoplasty, often referred to as a nose job, is a plastic surgery to reshape the nose. It is performed for a number of reasons: it can be requested for aesthetic reasons; to reconstruct the nose after an injury; to correct a deviated septum; etc. Rhinoplasty is one of the most requested plastic surgery procedures.

Rhinoplasty can be performed on females older than 16 and males over the age of 17. It's not recommended that rhinoplasty be performed earlier; the results are best when the patient's facial features are fully developed.

How rhinoplasty can change your appearance? Rhinoplasty can change the nose's size, width and profile. It can correct visible imperfections of the nasal bridge. It can also re-shape the nostrils.

Once the appearance of an imperfect nose is improved, so is the appearance of the entire face: the symmetry of the face becomes better and other facial features (beautiful eyes or mouth) become even more attractive. Perhaps even more importantly, a good looking nose will vastly improve your self-confidence.

How is rhinoplasty performed? There are two "versions" of rhinoplasty. A closed rhinoplasty involves incisions and stitches inside of the nose, only. An open rhinoplasty is characterized by incisions and stitches outside of the nose. (Those are very minimal and usually very well concealed.) The choice of technique is determined by the plastic surgeon based on the specifics of each individual case.

During a rhinoplasty surgery tiny incisions are made inside the nostrils and on the skin that separates them. The soft tissue of the nose is separated from the underlying cartilage and then reshaped to either correct its original shape, repair a damage or meet your aesthetic objectives. Depending on the extent of the surgery, rhinoplasty may be performed under a general or local anesthesia.

The recovery after rhinoplasty surgery has several stages. Patients usually resume their regular routine in about a week when temporary swelling and discoloration - which often occurs in the eye area - subsides. It takes several weeks for the nose to fully heal and from 6 to 12 months for the results of the surgery to become fully apparent.

Who can be considered rhinoplasty specialist in Los Angeles? Since there are no formal sub-specilaties in plastic surgery, a plastic surgeon who has extensive experience performing rhinoplasty is the best. (Many sources may advise you to ensure that your plastic surgeon is American Board of Plastic Surgery Certified. Yes, Board certified plastic surgeons have more education and training than those who are not certified. With that said, when it comes to a SPECIFIC procedure, experience, before and after photos of actual patients and the surgeons affiliation with an accredited hospital bode well for the outcome of your own rhinoplasty.)
